Under onsdagen stod det klart att Jon Jones inte kommer att få något fängelsestraff och kommer istället att få 18 månader skyddstillsyn. Här får vi höra vad Chael Sonnen hade att säga om Jones och ger även den forne mästaren i lätt tungvikt några goda råd om hur han ska hantera saker och ting hädanefter. Sonnen har som känt också tidigare hamnat i blåsväder efter att ha åkt fast för dopning och är för närvarande avstängd av NSAC. Det här berättar Sonnen, via ”Brutally Honest Show”:
I think it’ll be a wake up call for him. I really do. This has been going on for a really long time. These aren’t one-offs. One thing with athletes, as a whole, is that they never have to grow up. If you’re a 26 year-old athlete like he is,
you might as well be a 16 year-old. Athletes are never forced into that real world situation.
They’re always in the locker room joking around. It does stunt your development. I can tell you, as an athlete, there are downsides to the way your character evolves. It’s just slower.
He’s been at it for a long time and managed to keep himself safe and out of trouble for the most part and that changed. People know who he is. Cops are going to love to bust him. People are going to love to make anonymous phone calls and bring this guy down. He doesn’t have to change his behavior as drastically as some make it out. He’s just got to not drive.
You just don’t quit. You keep going. From a philosophical standpoint, controversy creates cash. If you get in a jam you’ve got to get in a room with smart people and start thinking. If you can’t turn controversy into cash then you’re missing a major opportunity.
One of my philosophies is that I don’t apologize, but that isn’t a blanket answer. If you’re wrong, apologize, but apologize to the right people. You don’t owe everybody an apology or explanation. If you’re wrong, don’t be afraid to say that you’re wrong. The coverup is always worse than the crime. Take your lumps and you’ll move forward a lot quicker.
