Chael Sonnen har under det senaste året testat positivt vid hela två tillfällen, och har därmed pensionerat sig från sporten. Sonnen tänker dock inte be om ursäkt för att ha dopat sig, och detta hade han att säga via sin podcast:
I’m not going to apologize because I’m not sorry. I’m a consenting adult; I knew exactly what I was doing. This was a premeditated decision. If I go jump in my car and I back up and I hit my neighbor’s garbage cans, I’m sorry for that. This was a calculated decision. I made the decision and I’ll live with it. That’s it. I wouldn’t make any excuses about it.
You cannot fail a drug test and then think that you’re going to come back later and patch up the boat. That’s the way it goes, particularly in this industry. If you fail a drug test, there’s an instant connotation of illegal drugs or narcotics. There’s always a connotation of steroids, and it often is one of those things. I don’t think that an athlete should ever patch that. I don’t think you should ever try to un-fry that egg.
If you’re going to play that game, if you’re going to try to get away with something; when you’re beat, you’re beat. I wouldn’t try to unwind that and go, ‘Oh yeah, there’s a little more to it.’ There’s nothing more to it. There’s nothing more to the story. I took something, I got caught with it, it’s tarnished and that’s it.
Sist vi såg Chael tävla var vid grapplingevenemanget Metamoris 4, där han ströps ut av Andre Galvao.
