Lätttungviktsmästaren Daniel Cormier hoppas att Jon Jones kan komma tillbaka till UFC så snart som möjligt och berättar att han då hellre skulle vilja möta honom än svenske MMA-stjärnan Alexander Gustafsson under UFC 192.
Det här berättade Cormier, via ”MMAJunkie”:
If Gus and I are scheduled to fight and Jones was back and Jones was eligible to compete, I would ask (the UFC). I would ask if there’s any way we could get this rematch done, and Alex fight someone else.
That’s the fight that you want. Any guy in the division would give you the same answer to that question.
Jones är fortfarande avstängd på obestämd tid efter inblandningen i en smitningsolycka i slutet av april, vilket gjorde att han då blev av med sin titel som mästare i lätt tungvikt. Cormier mötte sedan Anthony Johnson i en match om bältet och segrade då via submission.
Cormier berätta att han förväntade sig att möta Ryan Bader i sitt första titelförsvar och tyckte först att matchningen mot Gustafsson var ett konstigt val:
Ryan Bader fighting for a championship is a little weird. But he had won four fights in a row. But when they said Gustafsson, more people know who Gustafsson is and more people remember him for what he did against Jones. So it made a little more sense.
Cormier anser att Jones har gjort rätt i att hålla sig undan media tills rättsprocessen är avslutad och tycker inte att man kan vänta på att han ska koma tillbaka.
We can’t wait for him. We have to continue to fight, because at the end of the day, you’re still watching some of the most skilled athletes in the world compete for a championship.
