I samband med UFC 269 besegrade Charles Oliveira den topprankade lättviktaren Dustin Poirier. Nu berättar brasilianaren varför han helst vill möta den nionderankade Conor McGregor härnäst.

Oliveira har tagit hem segern i tio matcher i rad, varav de senaste två har gått för organisationens lättviktsbälte. Under en intervju med podcasten Trocação Franca reflekterade brasilianaren kring en potentiell matchning mot den tidigare dubbelmästaren McGregor. Oliveira hävdar att han hade prioriterat en titelmatch framför en fight mot irländaren tidigare, men att han tänker annorlunda nu när han har ett bälte kring sin midja. If I had the chance [in the past] to fight for the belt or fight Conor, everybody knows I’d fight for the belt. That already happened, I’m the champion now. The champion has a name and his name is Charles Oliveira, Charles ‘do Bronx.’ If I had the chance to fight Conor for money today, I would. The belt is mine and continues being mine. We’ll continue building our legacy and making history.
På en rak fråga om Oliveira skulle var beredd att vänta några extra månader för en match mot McGregor – istället för att fightas mot den förstarankade Justin Gaethje – svarade brasilianaren att han inte skulle tveka för en chans att möta irländaren.
Of course, no one’s a fool. ‘No, I’ll fight someone else because of the belt, leave Conor alone’ — who’s going to do that? Only a fool. If I had the opportunity to fight Conor, I would definitely fight Conor. The belt is mine regardless. The division has to get by and wait a little bit. There’s nothing else to do. We have to think about our families, our children, think about what we can do down the line.
Vidare berättade Oliveira att topprankade fighters vägrade möta honom när han befann sig längre ner på lättviktsdivisionens ranking. Avslutningsvis berättade dock brasilianaren att han är beredd att möta den fighter som UFC väljer att ställa mot honom. Oavsett om det blir McGregor eller Gaethje.
That happened to me. I was the No. 7 in the rankings and wanted to fight [top contenders] and they didn’t want to. The champion has a name now, we’re part of the same organization, and I’ll fight whoever the UFC puts against me. If they say it’s Conor, I’ll fight him. If they say it’s Justin, I’ll fight him. I just want to go home now and get some rest with my daughter and go back to the cage as soon as possible.
