Daniel Cormier berättar att hans tränare manade på honom att brottas mot Stipe Miocic vid nattens titelmatch vid UFC 241. Han anser nu att hans val att inte göra detta kostade honom titeln då han inatt förlorade via TKO i fjärde ronden. Efter matchen hade Cormier följande att säga till media rapporterar BJPenn.com:
(Wrestling) was the strategy. That’s probably the biggest letdown, is how I let my coaches down. They were begging me to wrestle, and that’s probably the most disappointing thing. I didn’t do what I was trained to do, and I feel like I let my coaches down.
Cormier förklarade varför han valde att hålla matchen stående efter den första ronden där han orsakat skada på Miocic vid en spektakulär nedtagning. Cormier berättade att han känt sig framgångsrik i sin boxning, som i matchen mot Alexander Gustafsson, i början av matchen vilket påverkade strategin:
I think when you start finding success and landing things, you just kind of fall in love with it. It feels like the Alexander Gustafsson fight (at UFC 192) all over again, when I wrestled a lot in the first round then for the last four rounds I just didn’t. (My coaches) were begging me to do it then. But tonight I actually paid the ultimate price for not listening to my coaches. I’m usually pretty good about doing that.
Cormier kommer nu att ta en paus och fundera på om han nu ska lägga handskarna på hyllan.
