Under helgens supergala, UFC 229, där Khabib Nurmagomedov besegrade Conor McGregor stod även tungviktaren Derrick Lewis som segrare efter att ha knockat Alexander Volkov i 3:e ronden. Backstage efter matchen blev Lewis intervjuad av media där han bland annat fick frågan huruvida han vill gå en titelmatch härnäst. Han svarade att han i nuläget inte känner sig redo, i huvudsak ser Lewis sin kondition som ett problem då han redan nu känner att matcher som är 3 ronder långa gör honom för trött.
I really don’t think I’m ready for a title shot, because that’s five rounds. I can barely go three rounds. I used to train 30 minutes a day, whenever I train. This camp, I trained for an hour. I guess I’ve got to hype up my hours a little bit more in training.
Lewis gav sina tankar om den potentiella motståndare Curtis Blaydes som han uttryckte sitt missnöje över.
Curtis Blaydes just playing fish right now. He wants me to say something back to him, and say, ‘OK, let me fight Curtis Blaydes next.’ Which, he’s behind me, instead of me saying, ‘OK, I want the title shot.’ That’s all he’s doing, just trying to play – he don’t want me to fight for the title next, he wants to get a shot at me before anyone does. That’s all it is, but fuck Curtis Blaydes.
Lewis blev även tillfrågad om matchen mot Volkov där han lyckades stå som segrare via knockout sent i 3:e ronden efter att ha sett ut att gå mot förlust.
That’s how I go into every fight, kill or be killed. Win, lose or draw, I’m still giving my all. No matter how tired I get, I can still punch as hard in the first round than in the third round or whatever. I’ve just got the most heart. A lot of these guys have been training for years and stuff like that. I’m really not a mixed martial artist. I’m really a brawler and stuff like that. I believe the heart will take you further than any kind of skill level or whatever. That’s what I believe.
