UFC har gjort signifikativa förändringar i sin dopingpolicy och överväger för närvarande ytterligare potentiella ändringar. Sedan UFC började samarbeta med USADA 2015 har praxis varit att offentligöra så fort någon utövare testat positivt. I mitten av juli beslutades dock att man kommer att vänta med att offentliggöra uppgifter om dopingöverträdelser till dess att fallet är fullständigt utrett.
Detta berättade UFC:s ”Chief Legal Officer” Hunter Cambell för ESPN:
If an athlete has a positive drug test, we aren’t putting them in a fight until their case is resolved — but what we can do is give the athlete an opportunity to adjudicate their issue without the public rushing to judgment. Announcing the test result creates this narrative around the athlete before people understand the facts.
En av huvudanledningarna bakom UFC:s beslut ska vara antalet fall av dopingöverträdelser som efter utredning bedömts vara oavsiktliga. Enligt UFC:s ”Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance”, Jeff Novitzky, har 21 av 62 fall efter utredning bedömts vara oavsiktliga, d.v.s. hela 34 %. Denna siffra är så hög att UFC kommit till slutsatsen att det är bättre att vänta med att gå ut med information om positiva test.
Cambell berättar vidare:
Part of the feedback Jeff and I have received from the athletes is, I would have appreciated the opportunity to adjudicate this, so the story could be I tested positive, a full investigation was conducted and it was found the use was unintentional. That story is very different than giving somebody a six-month window, where they are trying to defend themselves against accusations they are a cheater.
