Dustin Poirier klev in i sin titelmatch vid UFC 302 denna helg mot Islam Makhachev med en skada.
Dustin Poirier drogs med revbensskada inför helgens titelmatch
Den tidigare UFC-fightern Yves Edwards som tränade på American Top Team uppger att en av lagets främste lättviktare Dustin Poirier skadat sina revben just innan UFC 302. Detta gjorde matt han inte kunde träna grappling på över två veckor inför sitt tredje försök på UFC-titeln.
Yves Edwards sade följande via MMA Today on Sirius XM:
The way he performed Saturday night, man, that was super impressive to me and nobody knows this, and he’s probably gonna be like ‘Why did you put that out there’ I know Makhachev wasn’t 100 percent, nobody goes into a fight 100 percent, he hurt his ribs like two weeks before the fight and hadn’t wrestled or grappled for two, two-and-a-half weeks. I probably shouldn’t (say it) but to me, it’s more impressive. Against that guy, like you wrestled against that guy with hut ribs, okay, I’m impressed.

Edwards säger att revbensskadan inte var något som skulle få Poirier att hoppa av matchen. Det begränsade dock hans träning inför matchen mot Makhachev. Trots detta var Edwards imponerad av Poirier och han förmåga att fightas trots skadan och att han ändå lyckades försvara nio nedtagningar.
Även om Edwards var imponerad av Poiriers insats kom amerikanen att förlora via submission i femte ronden. Efter förlusten hintade han vid UFC 302 att det var hans sista match.
Poirier sade följande i en post-fight intervju:
I mean I know I can compete with the best of these guys. It’s just like if I do fight again, what am I fighting for? Just to fight? I’ve done that 50 times. I don’t know, I got a beautiful girl I love and I gotta see. I think this could be it honestly.
Om Poirier pensionerar sig så kommer han avsluta sin karriär med ett record på 30-9 samt en no-contest. Han erövrade 2019 interimtiteln i lättvikt och har besegrat namn som Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, Max Holloway, och Michael Chandler med flera.
