Khabib Nurmagomedovs status i lättviktsklassen har varit osäker sedan han meddelat sin pensionering i höstas fast ändå inte plockats bort som mästare. UFC-bossen Dana White kommer göra ett sista försök att övertala ryssen vid ett möte som är tänkt att öga rum i januari. Nu säger ryssen dock att hans bälte kommer att ges till vinnaren av den kommande matchen mellan Conor McGregor och Dustin Poirier.
Poirier och McGregor lär fightas om lättviktstiteln
Den obesegrade fightern med 29-0 i record meddelade sin pensionering efter sin dominanta seger över Justin Gaethje vid UFC 254. Nu har Nurmagomedov uttalat sig till Match TV där han anger de fighters som han tror kommer att fightas om hans bälte:
Lightweight has always been very competitive. All major UFC events in 2020 were built around lightweight. First [it was] Conor [McGregor’s] comeback, then Gaethje against [Tony] Ferguson. Then [Dustin] Poirier’s comeback. Then my fight with Gaethje. This weight [division] has always been interesting and competitive.
Top three [lightweight] fighters right now? Poirier, McGregor, and [Islam] Makhachev. He is not in the top-five yet, but those are the best fighters. My belt will be taken by the winner of Dustin and Conor.
Poirier och McGregor möts den 23 januari men matchen gäller inte ens en interimtitel i nuläget.
Nurmagomedov förklarade även varför UFC ännu inte tagit ifrån honom titeln ännu:
Dana White and I are constantly in touch, we did not discuss the moment about the vacancy of the belt. I think this is due to the fact that the organization really wants me to resume my career. This is understandable – I spent nine years in the league, I had a lot of fights, became the champion, defended the title, never lost, I have a huge fan base from all over the world.

Nurmagomedov säger även att UFC inte har någon i nuläget som de kan erbjuda honom för att han ska ångra sig:
The desire of the UFC is understandable to me, I don’t blame them. I will not hide, they are persuading me to return. There is nothing surprising. They offer conditions, fighters – but this is hard to surprise me, they have no one to offer me. Soon, in a couple of weeks, we will meet with Dana and discuss.
Nurmagomedov har varit mästare sedan 2018.
