Michael Chandler ändrar sig om Islam Makhachev: Han är den äkta varan
Michael Chandler var från början inte såld på Islam Makhachev. Även om han ansåg att ryssen var talangfull så ansåg han inte att Khabib Nurmagomedovs protegé förtjänade hypen. Nu erkänner dock Chandler att ryssen infriat förväntningarna.
Michael Chandler anser att Islam Makhachev infriat hypen
Makhachev har nu blivit lättviktsmästare efter att med relativ lätthet besegrat Charles Oliveira vid UFC 280 via arm-triangle-choke. Chandler säger nu via MMA On Point att Makhachev är den äkta varan:
Islam is the real deal. I think when I was asked before about it, my answer, I stand behind it. Islam hadn’t fought anybody in that top five and not necessarily just that, but it was the fact that Charles had looked so dominant, as well … Charles ran through, what, four guys? He fought me then he beat [Dustin] Poirier and beat [Justin] Gaethje.
Chandler misslyckades för egen del med att besegra Oliveira förra året då han i maj avslutades via TKO vid UFC 282 så amerikanen vet hur tuff brassen är att möta. Sättet som Makhachev dominerade Oliveira imponerade på Chandler:
You’re talking the Who’s Who of the Top 3, Top 5 guys, and the impressiveness in the nature in which he was finishing guys, he just looked awesome. Islam came out there and showed that he was a force to be reckoned with on the feet, obviously a force to be reckoned with on the ground, and caught Charles in that choke, and we have a new champion, and his name is Islam.
Hoppas få ännu en titelchans
Makhachevs första titelförsvar kommer sannolikt att äga rum den 11 februari i Australien nästa år mot fjäderviktsmästaren Alexander Volkanovski. Chandler hoppas dock kämpa sig fram till en andra titelchans genom att besegra Dustin Poirier den 12 november:
Islam proved that he was who he said he was. I stand corrected. He’s our champion, and I hope I can go out there on November 12th, can win my fight, and get that title shot soon.
