Tidigare i år fick Tony Ferguson erfara sin första förlust på flera år och nu är han intresserad av att möta antingen Dustin Poirier eller Conor McGregor.
Ursprungligen var tanken att ett möte mellan Tony Ferguson och Khabib Nurmagomedov skulle blivit av på UFC 249. På grund av svårigheter för Nurmagomedov att ta sig in i USA till följd av COVID-19 pandemin fick Ferguson istället ställas mot Justin Gaethje. Mötet slutade med Gaethje som vinnare via TKO i matchens 5:e rond. Sedan dess har det inte varit helt självklart vem Ferguson kan ställas mot härnäst men nu har han siktet inställt på två möjligheter.
Tagit en paus
Det var under en intervju med ESPN som Ferguson först berättade att han den senaste tiden tagit en paus från sporten och spenderat tid med sin familj.
I listened to my boxing coach and I took some time off. It was really good. I got to spend a lot of time with my family. I got to go to Big Bear and spend a lot of time with my boy, my pups, my wife, everybody and really think about what my future entitled and tried to put everything behind me. Because I really wasn’t happy with that fight. I enjoy getting hit but I can’t let that sh*t happen again.
Vill möta Dustin Poirier eller Conor McGregor
Efter att han tagit tid till semester har nu Ferguson siktet inställt på att antingen möta Dustin Poirier eller Conor McGregor härnäst, i ett möte där vinnaren får en titelmatch.
I’m just anxious for the future. I really am. They know how hungry and eager I am in the UFC. You want to give me Conor, give me Conor. You want to give me Poirier, we’ll make it happen and then we’ll fight and then we’ll fight the winner of the Gaethje and Khabib fight.
”Hyfsade fighters”
Ferguson kallar både Poirier och McGregor för hyfsade fighters och skulle gärna möta McGregor om han vill. Ferguson kommer även vara beredd på att motståndare kan ändras på kort notis i högre utsträckning den kommande tiden på grund av COVID-19 pandemin.
They’re both decent fighters. They’re both good. We’re all elite in the top five for a reason. As far as fights go, if Conor wants to fight, I’m down for that. I’d love to fight a southpaw. I do really well, I knocked out Aaron Riley’s jaw on accident. When it comes down to fighting standup, you’ve got to remember when I fought Edson Barboza. It’s a lot different. This mix and matching kind of stuff, that if it does happen again, I’m cool, man. I’m already used to it. It doesn’t matter. Opponent switches, COVID, anything else wants to pop up, let’s go, we’re used to it now.
Ferguson avslutar med att han framförallt vill möta Poirier, Nurmagomedov och McGregor på grund av deras atletiska förmågorna dessa besitter.
I would love to compete against Khabib, Poirier, McGregor. Those are the three right there. Why? Talent-wise, that’s why. Not because of any other ways or means. Because of the talent and the athletic respect that I have for their talent that they have in this sport.
När ett möte mellan Ferguson och antingen Poirier eller McGregor är i nuläget inte säkert.
