USADAs reglemente inför hårdare regler för atleter som tidigare pensionerat sig från sporten men vill tillbaka till sporten. För att få gå match måste en fighter varit aktiv i USADAs doping-kontroller i sex månader innan de få gå en fight. Men det finns undantag som kan ges. Exempelvis gavs den tidigare tungviktsmästaren, Brock Lesnar, undantagstillstånd för regeln och behövde bara testas i fyra månader innan hans match mot den tidigare titelutmanaren, Mark Hunt. USADAs policy säger följande för undantaget: ”Exceptional circumstances or where the strict application of that rule would be manifestly unfair to an Athlete”.
Talesman för USADA, Ryan Madden, hade följande att säga om reglementet:
It’s been a successful first year-and-a-half for this program, but with that said we’re always looking for ways to strengthen it and make it more effective for all involved. The policy updates announced today are a direct reflection of our experiences, and the feedback we’ve received – from both athletes and the UFC – all of which we believe will give further confidence to competitors that they can step into the Octagon, compete clean, and win.
Men för fighters som blivit avskedade från UFC avser andra regler och de kan ges undantag direkt. Ett undantag som exempelvis gavs Angela Hill efter att hon kommit tillbaka till UFC. Hill skulle till en början vänta i fyra månader innan hon fick tävla igen men gavs tillstånd att fightas i UFC efter att hon varit aktiv i USADAs dopingkontroller i mer än en månad.
Jeff Novoitsky som är frontfigur för ”UFC Athlete Health and Performance” sade följande till MMAFighting:
The majority of these changes are athlete driven. Early on in this, we knew there had to be a balancing act between the strength and comprehensiveness of the program and the fairness to the athlete. Over the year and half, this program has been in existence, we have consistently encouraged feedback from fighters and camps about how to make this program stronger, more comprehensive and, just as importantly, fairer to the athletes. All of these changes are a result of that interaction and feedback from athletes and camps.
Ett annat intressant tillägg av USADA är vad som avser ”in competition”. Ser vi tillbaka till Nate Diaz match mot Conor McGregor under UFC 202 fick Diaz en varning efter att han använt sig av cannabinoids (CBD), något som dagens nya regler hade förbisett då dopingkontrollen redan skulle tagits. Följande beskrevs av MMAFighting:
the in-competition window will close upon a post-fight sample collection. If the sample is not collected within a reasonable amount of time, the in-competition window will close one hour after the fighter’s post-bout medical clearance. The start of the in-competition period is now noon the day before the scheduled fight.
Andra regler som tidigare ansågs kontroversiella var att fighters inte fick träna med individer som blivit ertappade med otillåtna preparat i kroppen, något som de nya reglerna slopat helt.
