En användare på Reddit, som kallar sig för ’u/kneeco28’, har avslöjat stora brister inom UFCs officiella rankingsystem. Systemet avgör hur rankningen bland UFCs aktiva ’fighters’ ser ut.
UFC är tydliga med hur rankingen avgörs
UFCs officiella rankingsystem har en relativt stor betydelse för organisationen. Även fast rankingen i praktiken inte avgör vem som möter vem härnäst har den ofta en stor inverkan på vilka matcher som blir av. Enligt UFC själva avgörs rankningen av en grupp personer som arbetar inom MMA-media. Så här definieras utformningen av rankingen på UFCs egna hemsida.
Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.
5 av 14 medlemmar kan inte räknas som ’MMA-media’
Reddit-användaren har tagit en närmare titt på de, totalt 14, medlemmar som avgör rankingen och i förlängningen också atleters status i organisation. Enligt denna användare bör endast 9 av dessa definieras som ’MMA media’.
Looking at them one by one, in my opinion, 5 of the 14 cannot be considered to be in MMA media at all at this junction. I tried to use the broadest possible definition and still over a third of the people ranking the fighters are not, in 2019, in mma media. When you pair that with the fact that their impact is already out of whack of what the UFC suggested it would be (each is one of 14 rather than one of 90), this is just insanity.
En av de medlemmar som röstar om UFCs ranking heter Romain Cadot. En person som till synes inte sysslar med att täcka sporten alls och som arbetar på en hemsida som inte existerat på fem år.
Romain Cadot, per LinkedIn, is apparently the editor-in-chief of vladusport.fr. Here’s the thing: Vladusport.fr doesn’t exist. If you go there, it’s just some online shopping thing squatting in the space. According to their Facebook page, they haven’t existed in over 4 years. The newest post there is from April 2015 which asks for a bit of patience before the return of the site. They similarly have a YouTube channel that hasn’t released a video since the 2015 teaser of the site’s return. The website’s twitter hasn’t tweeted since 2013 and the tweets that are there link to articles that are no longer on the web. Again, 14 people yield this power of fighters’ careers. This is one of them. The website hasn’t existed in almost 5 years.
