Bellator-fightern och UFC-veteranen Leslie Smith, 37, har blivit arresterad i samband med en demonstration för rörelsen ”Black Lives Matter”. Smith berättar att hon bryr sig om BLM-föfelsen mer än något annat i dagsläget, och prioriterar demonstrationsdeltagande framför MMA.

Leslie ”The Peacemaker” Smith (11-8-1) rapporteras ha blivit arresterad under en demonstration för ”Black Lives Matter”-rörelsen. Smith är i dagsläget kontrakterad till organisationen Bellator, men spenderade en stor del av sin karriär i UFCs bantamviktsdivision. Enligt Smith själv skall anledningen till hennes arrestering vara att hon bröt mot det utegångsförbud som införts i Oakland, Kalifornien, en arrestering hon skall ha sökt i ett fall av ”civil olydnad”.

I en intervju nyligen diskuterade Leslie Smith hennes sammandrabbning med lagen. Hon förklarar att hon blev arresterad tillsammans med en grupp kvinnor, och hyllar den yngre generationen för deras vilja att se ändring i samhället.
Just civil disobedience – they set a curfew, and then I decided to get arrested. But it was with four 18- to 20-year-old girls that I got arrested with, and I have so much faith in the future. They were awesome, they were wonderful, and I’m so happy and proud that this next generation is stepping up in ways that the past generations really haven’t.
Smith spenderade inte en längre tid bakom lås och bom dock, då hon blev släppt senare under natten, berättar hon.
I was out from jail pretty quickly. They said that they were not going to book us into the jail; they said that we were citation-only. They took their time, though. They put us inside of a van for a little while, then they transported us, then they left us there for a little while, and then they transported us to the jail, and then they left us there for a little while. It was about 2 o’clock in the morning when I got out.
Imponerad och berörd av demonstrationerna
Smith säger sig ha en enorm respekt för de som demonstrerar för Black Lives Matter. Hon ser en arrestering till följd av demonstration som en god utmärkelse, något att vara stolt över.
If I was ever hiring somebody and for some reason their police record came up and I saw that they had been arrested for civil disobedience for protesting against police brutality, that would 100% put them to the top of the list as far as my hiring would go.
Hon avslutar med att förklara att hon väljer BLM-rörelsen framför MMA. Rättvisa inför lagen för minoriteter och ett slut på polisens övervåld är de viktigaste åtaganden i hennes liv, säger Smith.
I feel like the Black Lives Matter protests going on right now are the most important thing. If I had to choose what do I care about in the whole wide world, if the last thing that I post on my Instagram is going to be this stamp of what do I care about if I were to die tomorrow, then I care a lot more about this national movement to protect black people and other people of color from police brutality in the United States. I care about that way more than I do about anything else.
Leslie Smith är inte den ende framstående MMA-atleten som engagerat sig i de demonstrationer som blossat upp efter det dödliga polisingripandet mot amerikanen George Floyd för två veckor sedan. Dock är hon den ende som hittills blivit arresterad till följd av sitt engagemang, något som Smith tycks anse vara en god prestation, en fjäder i hatten.
