UFC:s fjädervikts-mästare Max Hollway (21-4 MMA, 17-4 UFC) nämns ofta i diskussioner om vem som är den bästa fjäderviktaren någonsin och är lika ofta i toppen på folks ”pound for pound” listor. Med sin stora vinst på UFC 240 mot Frankie Edgar (23-7-1 MMA, 17-7-1 UFC) (som med största sannolikhet kommer att väljas in i UFC:s Hall of fame) så blev dessa två argument bara starkare. I en intervju efter matchen så berättade Max mer om var han tycker att han står i divisionen och planerna för framtiden, detta via MMAJunkie.
“I’m trying to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, not the best featherweight in the world. I’m trying to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and Frankie is one of the guys to help me one step towards that goal.”
”Jose Aldo’s still the man”
Holloway har under en tid byggt upp en riktigt stark resumé och har flera stora vinster i sitt bagage. Han har dessutom två vinster mot den forne fjädervikts-mästaren José Aldo, någon som många länge ansett som den bästa fjäderviktaren genom tiderna. Holloway fortsätter med att berätta att han strävar efter att vara den bästa ”pound for pound” fightern i världen men att han fortfarande har en bit kvar.
“I’m just trying to be a legend. I’m trying to be the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and that’s the names I got to be up there with, and that’s respect. So like I said, all this GOAT talk and whatever, that doesn’t affect me. When it’s all said and done, I can sit back and relax, and (Jose) Aldo’s still the man.”
“He’s still got the most wins”
“He’s still got the most wins, he’s got the most title defenses and so on. Until I beat those records, then maybe I can be in that conversation.”
Det var många som kommenterade Holloways storlek när han mötte Dustin Poirer i lättvikt under UFC 236. Holloway förlorade matchen och många tyckte att han såg för klen ut och att han kommer att fortsätta få problem mot de stora grabbarna. En av kritikerna var Dana White. Holloway verkar dock inte vara rädd att gå upp till lättvikt igen för att testa farvattnet, han fortsätter.
“Dana changes his mind every day. Tomorrow he may be like, ‘Hey Max, we need a heavyweight fight.’ So Dana’s mind is all over the place. I got to respect the boss, but at the end of the day it is what it is. I know if an opportunity come up there, and they come calling, we won’t shy away.”
”They’re not Frankie”
Holloway har stundtals varit ganska trögstartad i sina matcher, men när han väl fått upp ångan så har det oftast slutat illa för motståndaren. Holloway verkar dock inte bekymrad över detta och menar att alla motståndare är olika och att det ibland tar lite tid att lista ut hur motståndaren fungerar, han fortsätter.
“Like a train, I just got to get my engine rolling. Once it’s rolling, it’s hard to stop, so I just got to get in there and figure it out. Everybody’s different. We have guys to mimic Frankie, but they’re not Frankie, you know, so when I get in there I try to figure it out, try to find what we’ve been working, and see what’s working and turn it up from there.”
