Nyligen stod det klart att lättviktsveteranen Gilbert Melendez lämnar organisationen UFC. Detta efter att han enbart vunnit en match under sina senaste 7 matcher. Vad som väntar Melendez härnäst är osäkert då han tidigare har hintat om pension.
Någon som dock vill se Melendez komma till organisationen Bellator är den forne rivalen Josh Thomson. Via sin youtube kanal “Weighing In”, som han driver tillsammans med den före detta MMA-domaren “Big” John McCarthy, berättar Thomson att han vill att ett tredje möte mellan honom och Melendez blir av i organisationen.
Thomson menar att det rör sig om ouppklarade affärer mellan de två då de båda har vunnit varsin match och i det tredje mötet, där Melendez tilldelades vinsten via ett delat domslut, berättar Thomson att de båda såg sig som vinnare.
This would not be like a money fight. This would be more of a situation where the two of us feel like there’s unsettled business. I won the first fight hands down, convincing. He won the second fight, hands down, convincingly. The third fight was a split decision loss. It was very controversial. As he was leaving the cage, people were booing. People were throwing things. As we walked down the tunnel, I felt this was extremely inappropriate, people started spitting at them as they were leaving the arena. If you go back and watch that fight, I obviously felt like I won; he obviously felt like he won.
Thomson inser att mötet enbart kommer att gå 3 ronder, till skillnad från deras tidigare matcher som alla har varit för en titel, då Bellator inte har 5-ronders matcher för annat än titelmatcher. Thomson menar dock att detta är en fördel då varken han själv eller Melendez är de fighters de en gång var.
We spent 75 minutes in the cage. Every time it was for the title. This time it’s not for the title. This time is a three-round fight. Bellator doesn’t do five-round main event fights. This is a good opportunity for the two of us. We know that we’re not what we used to be. There’s no doubt about that. There’s no denying that. But we both feel like there’s unsettled business.
